Poetry Contest for Grades 9 and 10

A while back I received the following invitation:

A Panacea of Poetry East Central is having a poetry contest! It will be positively poetic and panoptic!

The first phase we undertook in Grades 9 and 10 was to explore Ladders to the Dark. The first poem was published, April 21, 2009. And today 38 students have written over 350 poems, fragments, and musings.

Links to all published poems can be found at our Queneau blog, aka Random Poetry, in the comments section following each exercise.

Now, here’s what I would like to see from students, today:

  1. Write a post that contains links to three of your best poems and/or links to three of the best poems written by your classmates
  2. Submit a comment below with a link to that post.
  3. Return to this blog later today to find out who I’ve seleted to advance to the next phase

Today, three poems in Grade 9 and three poems from Grade 10 will be entered in the next phase of the contest.

Winners(and prizes???) of A Panacea of Poetry will be announced June 15, 2009.

70 Books read and so far in English 10

The “tens” have been focused on “Decisions – Action or Apathy“.
They have read over 70 books and published reviews at Mrs. Worobec’s STJ Library blog.
They have library cards and had the opportunity to go to The Vermilion Public Library.

They attended Lakeland College Performing Arts production of “Opening Night” written by Norm Foster in the Vic Juba Community Theatre.

English 10: Decisions–Action or Apathy

We must constantly make decisions in daily life. Some decisions are simple choices while others affect people’s entire lives. Furthermore, every decision has consequences and often there is not a clear alternative. Decisions involve weighing alternatives and considering the consequences. This is an opportunity for students to examine values, beliefs, and pressures that surround decision making.

When you have to make a choice and don’t make it, that is in itself a choice. -William James

Stoics Reign on Caesar’s Parade

Read the first scene of Julius Caesar(or here or here).

Recall class discussions on the “Four Postulates.”

Recall class discussion on Stoicism and Epicureanism.

What is the Feast of Lupercal? Why would it have any appeal to an Epicurean? A Stoic?

Are Marullus and Flavius more Epicurean or Stoic in their response to the citizens’ preparations for Caesar’s victory parade?

How do the citizens behave throughout the scene? Initially are they Stoic or Epicurean? How do they leave?

Predict Caesar’s response to Marullus and Flavius driving away the vulgar herd.

Who killed Pompey? What is a Triumvirate? Why was the First Triumvirate “unofficial”? Who forms the Second Triumvirate?

What other questions can you raise about Act 1, Scene 1?

Apathy versus Action(LOTF)

Read, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding. Discuss the novel with the following focus: How and why must we act upon our knowledge, values, and abilities for the well-being of others?

  • How can we act to make our views and decisions felt?
